Background of the Study

The textile industry is a major contributor to economic growth and employment in Nigeria. However, workers in this sector are often exposed to occupational hazards, particularly poor ventilation, which leads to various respiratory health issues. In textile factories, airborne contaminants such as cotton dust, chemical fumes, and synthetic fibers increase the risk of respiratory conditions, including chronic bronchitis, occupational asthma, and byssinosis (Rahman et al., 2024).

In Katsina State, where textile production is a key industry, many factories operate in poorly ventilated environments. Research indicates that inadequate ventilation leads to poor air quality, increased exposure to airborne pollutants, and a higher prevalence of respiratory illnesses among workers (Abdullahi & Umar, 2023). Despite national and international occupational safety standards, many textile factories fail to implement adequate ventilation systems, putting workers' health at risk. This study seeks to examine the impact of poor ventilation on workers' respiratory health in the textile industry in Katsina State.

Statement of the Problem

Many textile workers in Katsina State suffer from respiratory ailments due to prolonged exposure to poor air quality in factories. The lack of effective ventilation exacerbates the accumulation of dust, chemicals, and other pollutants, leading to increased cases of occupational lung diseases. However, there is limited research on the extent of respiratory illnesses caused by poor ventilation in the textile industry. This study aims to assess the impact of poor ventilation on workers' health and recommend measures to improve air quality in textile factories.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the prevalence of respiratory health issues among textile industry workers in Katsina State.

  2. To assess the impact of poor ventilation on workers' respiratory health.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving air quality and ventilation in textile factories.

Research Questions

  1. What are the common respiratory illnesses experienced by textile workers in Katsina State?

  2. How does poor ventilation contribute to respiratory health problems in the textile industry?

  3. What measures can be implemented to improve factory ventilation and protect workers' health?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Poor ventilation in textile industries significantly increases the risk of respiratory illnesses among workers.

  2. Workers in poorly ventilated textile factories experience higher rates of respiratory diseases compared to those in well-ventilated environments.

  3. Improving ventilation systems in textile factories will reduce respiratory health issues among workers.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on textile factories in Katsina State, assessing ventilation conditions, workers' respiratory health status, and safety compliance. Limitations may include difficulty in obtaining medical records of workers and reluctance of factory owners to provide access to workplace conditions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Ventilation: The process of supplying fresh air and removing contaminated air from a workspace.

  • Respiratory Health Issues: Conditions affecting the lungs and breathing, including asthma and chronic bronchitis.

  • Occupational Safety Standards: Regulations designed to protect workers from health hazards in industrial settings.
